DJ music festival 1

Tue 03 Jun 2008

VipINmusic Festival @ Lake Jarun
Zagreb
http://vipinmusicfestival.com
Touch down in Zagreb for this 20,000-capacity big 'un, which features some of the biggest beasts in dance and rock. The main draw is indisputably the mighty Prodigy, who'll be tearing into some new material from their forthcoming (not quite so) long-awaited album. Also stepping up are Jazzanova, dub-breaks dudes Dreadzone, Afro funkers Seun Kuti and Egypt 80, Stereo MCs, and indie-rap-soulsters Go Team.

If you like a bit of indie and rock in your festival pudding, then dig Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Serj Tankian, baby.
Heads Up Lake Jarun in Zagreb is a vast body of water where people swim, sail and surf. It's surrounded by clubs and bars for when you're feeling a little less active.

South-East European Music Event (SeeMe) @ Subway, Central Rail Station
Sofia
http://www.seeme-sofia.com
Doing for Bulgaria what Sonar's been doing for Spain, SeeMe is one of the shining lights of the East European dance music community. Converging on the Bulgarian capital for a weekend of seminars, workshops and the all-important hi-octane house and techno fun, and now in its third year, this is already growing into a monster event.

Last year Pendulum, Satoshi Tomiie and James Zabiela smashed it, and the 2008 bill will be announced shortly.
Heads Up A pint costs about 80p in Sofia. Happy days!

Coloursfest '08 @ Braehead Arena and Waterfront
Glasgow
http://colours.co.uk 0141 204 5151
The annual Glaswegian tear-out returns. Hosted by Colours and Inside Out, the main arena is a typically titanic trance affair with Paul van Dyk, Judge Jules, Marcel Woods and Richard Durand.

Elsewhere, the Radio 1 outdoor stage chomps it out to Judge Jules, Dave Pearce and Trophy Twins, Hed Kandi funk it up in style whilst London's legendary Gallery make their Coloursfest debut with Tall Paul, Sister Bliss, Nick Warren, Chris Lake and Dave Seaman.

Bosh bunnies can bounce themselves bonkers in the Tidy arena with Alex Kidd, the Tidy Boys and Phil York's four-deck party techno showcase Bootek.
Heads Up Coloursfest has been going since 2002 and is Scotland's longest running pure dance festival.

Rock Ness @ Loch Ness
Dores, Inverness
http://rockness.co.uk 0844 888 7625
The Rock Ness phenomenon just keeps on growing. This time round, vocal supporter Fatboy Slim returns and is joined by Digitalism, Simian Mobile Disco, Razorlight and CSS, to name just a few.

2ManysDJs also come back with their Radio Soulwax arena, David Guetta's debuts a F**ck Me I'm Famous arena, whilst Felix Da Housecat makes his Rock Ness debut. Oh, as if that wasn't enough, the legendary Underworld are also on the bill with a shitload more to be confirmed.

Once again, all the action will take place on the lush banks of the mythical Loch Ness. Although you might want to secure yourself a bag of freaky funghi if you're set on any sighting of Nessie herself.
Heads Up Check out the Bestival crew's Nesstival arena, where there will be a fashion fabulous dressing up tent, a Lost In Sound Experience, a Bollywood Cocktail Bar plus loads of other surprises.

Beach Break Live @ The Beach
Polezeath, North Cornwall
http://beachbreaklive.com
If dinner means a takeaway pizza and June means school's out for summer then you might be up for the second Beach Break Live - the UK's only student-only surfing festival.

A beer soaked post-exam blitz of sick sounds and surfing, the music is a cross-genre student-friendly mix of boisterous breaks (The Stantons, The Freestylers), jangly indie (The Wombats, The Cribs) and scruffy beats (Scratch Perverts, Mr Scruff).

There's no shortage of entertainment with surfing tournaments, a beach beats DJ and dance artist contest judged by Groove Armada's Andy Cato, a fancy dress finale and The Mighty Cornish Goblet tournament, where you can test your skills at such wholesome Cornish activities as pig tossing, bail hurling and scarecrow making.
Heads Up Beach Break's promoters actually appeared on Dragon's Den with their idea, won over offers from all four Dragons in an unprecedented sweep only to turn them all down and rake it on their own terms.

Synch Festival @ Benaki Museum
Athens
http://www.synch.gr
Bar the odd major club, Greece isn't yet known as a hotspot for electronic and dance music but Synch Festival is doing a lot to change that perception. A multimedia cultural event with a particular focus upon music, their eclectic and on the pulse booking policy ensures that there are always some exciting surprises in the line-ups.

This year is no exception: punters will be treated to the dystopian dubscapes of Kode 9, the acid-singed grooves of DJ Pierre, Pedro's hazy beats, The Field's shoe-gazing techno, the baggy indie rhythms of Happy Mondays, French disco king Pilooski, Detroit technoid Juan Atkins, jazz man Four Tet and Irish goddess Roisin Murphy.
Heads Up Why not extend your stay and take advantage of your surroundings with some island hopping? Athens is the perfect transport hub from which to explore nearby islands by ferry.

Escape Into The Park @ Singleton Park
Swansea
http://escapefestival.co.uk
If you're looking for bespoke yoga tents, random contortionist performances or an afternoon acoustic set from Ocean Colour Scene, then you've come to the wrong place. Escape is a balls-to-the-wall rave-fest - no frills, all thrills and a field of Welsh loon-jobs going bonkers to bosh.

There's rushing trance from Godskitchen, blistering hard dance from Polysexual, d&b bombs from ATM and Raveology and feel-good house from Lamerica, whilst the main stage centerpiece of Underworld live is complimented by superclub slayers Ferry Corsten, Fedde Le Grand and Trophy Twins. Glowsticks not included.
Heads Up Breaking up the 4/4 frenzy of, well, just about every single arena, the Scratch Perverts will be bringing some funky breakbeat bizzle and party mayhem to the main stage.

Sonar @ various venues
Barcelona
http://www.sonar.es
Some say that Sonar's the daddy of the festival world. It's certainly one of the most switched on and innovative. With a multitude of live acts performing in the day throughout Barcelona, and top-notch DJs performing by night in a massive aircraft hangar on the edge of the city, it's always a trip. Add to that the cavalcade of wicked clubs in town putting on their own Sonar fringe events and top DJs, and you've got a serious winner on your hands.

And did we mention the stellar selection of artists playing? Try M.I.A., Goldfrapp, Hercules and Love Affair, Justice, Diplo, The Field, Spank Rock, Yazoo, Flying Lotus, Shackleton, Pilooski, Richie Hawtin, the list goes on and on… Humungous!
Heads Up If you fancy digging some culture while you're there, get up to Parc Guell - Gaudi's amazing landscaped park - and look out over the city from the balustrade.

Les Siestes Électroniques @ Bikini Club
Toulouse
http://www.les-siestes-electroniques.com
A gathering for like-minded electronic music fiends, which celebrates the more esoteric and underground groove, the question we're all asking is, how can this superlative French fest really be free?

When they've got the calibre of such über-coolisch acts and DJs like deep tech eclectic cat Damian Lazarus, cosmic kittens Smith 'n' Hack, Mountain of One and Lindstrom, and lover man Sebastian Tellier on the bill, it's hard to believe.

Set in the idyllic rolling hills and eye-popping landscapes of the South of France, how can you resist?
