http://www.dissonanze.it
This year Roma's premier electronic event adds another jaw-dropping location to its list. As well as the traditional locales of the Palazzo Dei Congressi and Auditorium Parco Della Musica, this time out the extraordinary environs of the Ara Pacis museum will host live performances and DJ sets, further cementing Dissonanze's reputation as a festival dedicated to the arts, culture and music alike.

By day a platform for visual and sound art, at night it's time to shock out to everything from bass botherer The Bug, to fidget house master Switch, via Fujiya and Miyagi, Carl Craig, Prefuse 73, Madlib and Erol Alkan. Sweet!

Movement: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival @ Detroit Hart Plaza
Detroit, Michigan
http://myspace.com/detroitmusicfest
It's the mother lode, baby! The original source of techno keeps it real with its annual fest celebrating the best electronic music the city, and beyond, has to offer.

Such revered Motown treasures as Carl Craig and Terrence Parker will be repping their ends, with other tech colossi like Dubfire, Cassy, Cobblestone Jazz (live), Joris Voorn, James Zabiela, Moby (DJ set), Benny Benassi, DBX (live), Speedy J, and there are a few curveballs like hip-hoppers Cool Kids and mash up merchant Girl Talk. This is gonna be massive. Believe!
Heads Up Don't miss the original architects of lino-cutting old skool electro, Egyptian Lover and Newcleus.

Gatecrasher Summer Sound System @ Turweston Aerodrome
Westbury, near Brackley, Biddlesden Rd, Northamptonshire, NN13
http://summersoundsystem.com 08704 282 726
Can you remember the last time both The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers headlined the same dance festival? Okay, that could be down to our chemically battered memories as well as the fact that it was a massively long time ago, but to big them up as the only highlights of Gatecrasher's two-day rave behemoth would pure folly.

In a beast of a line-up that ravages through every single era and genre of dance history, there are live shows from acid house legends 808 State, grime spitter Dizzee Rascal, French fuzz masters Justice, computer-pop darlings Crystal Castles, Audio Bullys, organic tech king Gabriel Ananda and Pendulum, to name just a few.

Then there's a jaw-plunging 200 strong DJ bill that includes Inner City's Kevin Saunderson, Tiga, Claude VonStroke, Goldie and Dan Ghenacia, and arenas from Ed Banger, Dirty Disco, Hat Club and a 20 Years of Acid House celebration.

We're not so sure about Chicane live but when there are 11 arenas to choose from on both days, it's safe to we don't have to be. Never has Gatecrasher's iconic lion roared quite so loudly.
Heads Up Catch the Guilty Pleasures VIP room for plenty of forbidden fun and shameful classics!

Evolution Festival @ Newcastle & Gateshead Quayside
Newcastle
http://evolutionfestival.co.uk 08444 771000
Without getting all pipe and slippers on yo' ass, you can't scrape much for £3 in this day of age so best get yourself along to the Evolution Festival - 'cos that's all it costs.

On Spiller's Wharf, highlights include Mike Skinner's Streets, mockney songstress Kate Nash, The Whip and Reverend & The Makers, but it's over on the adjoining Baltic Square where we'll likely be camped.

A bubbling disco-fried punk-funk ensemble will see CSS, New Young Pony Club, Crystal Castles, Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Hercules and Love Affair crunk out their varying strains of subversive new wave pop for the Geordie masses. Profits support international charity Water Aid too.
Heads Up Dive on down to the Southern Fried Mobile Disco at Digital after, where Audio Bullys, Armand Van Helden and Caged Baby rock out between 10.30pm and 3.30am.

Liverpool Sound City @ 30 separate venues across the city
Liverpool
http://liverpoolsoundcity.co.uk
Part of their year as Europe's City of Culture, Liverpool's Sound City works much like a compact version of the annual Amsterdam Dance Event with a host of daytime panels complimenting a kick-ass city-wide party calendar.

Hedonistic highlights include Fest Evol at the Carling Academy on the Tuesday, with Does It Offend You Yeah?, Hadouken! and Crystal Castles, and Clash magazine's Thursday session at The Barfly with Hercules and Love Affair, Four Tet and The Field.

You can also catch The Infadels, Reverend & The Makers, The Whip, King Creosote and Cadence Weapon in the city over the four days.
Heads Up Can't attend? Don't fret too hard as most of Sound City will be streamed live in the virtual 3-D world of Second Life.

Primavera Sound Festival @ Parc Del Forum
Barcelona
http://primaverasound.com
Sonar's not the only big dog in town when it comes to the Catalan capital. Barcelona's rapidly ascending Primavera can certainly hold its own, with a dream line-up that combines the best of electronic producers and guitar janglers in one special bill.

Whoever thought up the idea of bringing Ellen Allien, De La Soul, Robert Hood, Digital Mystikz, Tiefschwarz, Clipse, Cat Power and Young Marble Giants together is inspired indeed. Add to that the presence of such legends as Public Enemy (performing the classic 'It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back') and you've got a corker on your hands.
Heads Up The mighty Portishead are back and playing after a 10-year hiatus. Why not catch their pitch-black beats 'n' songs in the beautiful sunshine?!

Sunrise Celebration @ Bearley Farm
South Somerset
http://sunrisecelebration.com 0845 108 0259
The Sunrise Celebration might boast 12 stages, 24-hour entertainment, 200 live bands and over 100 DJs but its family-friendly vibe is charged by sustainability and social conscience rather than mindless commercial hedonism. Hell, even Michael Eavis reckons Sunrise is like what was happening at Glasto some "35 years ago".

An intimate utopian village affair, the whole festival is run on renewable energy with morning wake yoga sessions, astrological speed-dating, workshops on environmental innovations and circus cabaret just some of the boutique offerings.

Musical highlights include Dub Pistols, The Orb, Eat Static, ska legends The Beat, Beardyman and Far Too Loud.
Heads Up The Sunrise site was devised with a 12 fold geometrical layout based upon the principles of ancient cultures, sacred geometry and numerical harmony.

Wax:On Live @ Lotherton Hall
Leeds
http://waxonlive.com
Not content with kicking out some of most memorable club nights in the North, the wily Wax:On crew have come straight out of the festival blocks to give us this year's best one-day dance festival. Fuck knows, we needed it!

As eclectic as their club sessions, Wax:On's own live stage features post-acid house rockers Primal Scream, DFA's Hercules and Love Affair, techno legend Green Velvet, Erol Alkan and Late Of The Pier.

As for the five other arenas, we'll be checking Andrew Weatherall and an X-Press 2 acid house set in the Wall of Sound arena, Steve Lawler and Derrick May in the faultless Technique arena, Skream and Shy FX in Hospitality's dubstep meets deebee arena, Matthew Herbert and Justus Köhncke live in the Naïve Melody arena and The Count and Sinden live in Adventures In The Beetroot Field arena. But that's not even half of the talent on show. It's sick as from start to finish, basically.
Heads Up The Wax:On crew have been carving out their own Northern niche since 2004 and have booked everyone from Jacques Lu Cont and Mylo to Digitalism live and Dave Clarke for their parties in both Leeds and Newcastle.
